Consciousness and Volition: 1st International Krakow Conference in Cognitive Science

Krakow, Poland, 27-29 September 2012

The 1st International Krakow Conference in Cognitive Science: Consciousness and Volition will focus on the current state of consciousness research, with particular reference to connections with issues pertaining to volitional acts. Principal topics will include: mental acts of volition, perception, memory, qualia, emotions, as well as the neurophysiological and physical foundations of all of these. We will also set out to analyse the possibility of artificial modelling of such mental acts, and correlations between them and experimentally discoverable events. However, the conference program is expected to include a wide-range of related topics and innovative approaches, even where these involve research with explicitly interdisciplinary orientation. For further information please view our conference homepage at cognitivescience.eu

Invited speakers:
Peter Halligan (Cardiff University, United Kingdom)
Bernhard Hommel (Leiden University, the Netherlands)
Zdzisław Kowalczuk (Gdansk University of Technology, Poland)
Thomas Metzinger (Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, Germany)
David Papineau (King's College London, United Kingdom)

Call for papers

The conference organisers cordially invite prospective participants to submit original proposals for consideration.

For a 30-minute presentation, we accept a 450-600 word abstract. All abstracts should be prepared for blind review and submitted through: http://www.cognitivescience.eu/index.php?s=registration

The deadline for applications is 15 May 2012.

Sixth European Working Memory Symposium (EWOMS-6)

The Sixth European Working Memory Symposium (EWOMS-6) will take place in Fribourg (Switzerland) from Monday 3rd to Wednesday 5th September 2012. The Department of Psychology of the Université de Fribourg will hosted the conference (http://www.unifr.ch/psycho/site/fr/).

The main focus will be on “Models of Working Memory”, and priority for oral presentations will be given to papers on this topic. However, and as for the previous EWOMS, submissions for communications on a different topic, but still related to WM, are welcome. Because EWOMS is a satellite of ESCoP, priority will be given to ESCoP members who will also benefit from discount registration fees. To keep the size of the conference reasonable, a maximum of 60 people will be able to attend the conference, and only those with an accepted communication. Thus, no on-site registration will be accepted.

Researchers in the field of working memory are invited to submit proposal for oral or poster presentations by sending the attached form to ewoms6 (at) gmail (dot) com. The deadline for paper and poster abstracts (max 200 words) is April 15th, 2012.

Swiss National Science Foundation European Summer School on “Computational Modeling of Memory and Decision Making: From Bayesian techniques to applications in society and economics”

Bergün (Graubünden), Switzerland, 24 June – 7 July 2012

Venue: Kurhaus Bergün  http://www.kurhausberguen.ch

Applications are now being considered (until 15 April 2012)

Organizers and instructors

  1. Klaus Oberauer (University of Zurich, Switzerland)
  2. Stephan Lewandowsky (University of Western Australia)
  3. Jörg Rieskamp (University of Basel, Switzerland)
  4. Lael Schooler (Max-Planck Institute Berlin, Germany)
  5. Simon Farrell (University of Bristol, U.K.)
  6. Gordon Brown (University of Warwick, U.K.)
  7. Bob French (CNRS, University of Burgundy, France)
  8. Joachim Vandekerckhove (University of California, Irvine)
  9. E. J. Wagenmakers (University of Amsterdam, Netherlands)

Most areas of cognitive psychology have recognized the power of computational and mathematical models and have embraced their benefits to rigorous theorizing. One illustration of this trend is the growing popularity of Bayesian approaches to cognitive modelling. This powerful trend comes, however, at a cost: The complexity of models and modelling techniques render it increasingly difficult for non-experts to acquire the necessary skills and then keep pace with developments.
This summer school is dedicated to introducing researchers to the basic techniques of computational and mathematical modelling from the ground up and in a hands-on manner. The instructors represent a broad range of expertise and are all research leaders in their field with extensive experience in teaching of modelling.

Cost
The complete cost is €995 including (a) twin share accommodation at the conference hotel from 24 June – 7 July; (b) breakfast and dinner (but not lunch); and (c) all course materials, including a copy of a textbook (Lewandowsky and Farrell, 2011, Computational Modeling in Cognition: Principles and Practice. Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage.)

Applicants from anywhere in the world are welcome. Visit http://ss.cidlab.com/ for further details and to submit an application. Application deadline is 15 April 2012.

1st Conference of the European Society for Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience (ESCAN)

Marseille, France, 9-12 May 2012

The Aim of ESCAN is to promote research in the domain of the Cognitive and Affective Neurosciences, and related research, in particular with regard to the collaboration and exchange of information between investigators in Europe.

The 2012 conference in Marseille will be the first ESCAN conference of the officially created society.

ESCAN 2012 will offer a floor to present research on all aspects of cognitive and affective neuroscience, provided they have a close relationship to behavior, affect and / or cognition in humans. Dependent measures can include all neuroimaging modalities, electrophysiology of all types, Autonomous Nervous System measures and other bodily measurements.

Keynote talks by Pr. Fernando Lopes da Silva (Amsterdam), Pr. Pascal Belin (Glasgow), Pr. Katya Rubia (London).

25+ symposia already programmed

For further details, please visit http://escan2012.sciencesconf.org/

To note, the ESCAN society kick-off meeting happened on December 10-12, 2009 in Amsterdam. It was the first public manifestation of the society. A total of 70 participants from all over Europe attended 20 scientific presentations covering the breadth of cognitive and affective neuroscience, from consciousness, via vision and cognitive processes, their development and brain-machine-interfaces, to affective neuroscience and its clinical applications. After this meeting, the society was officially created.

Tagung experimentell arbeitender Psychologen 2012

Mannheim, Germany, April 1st-4th, 2012

The "TeaP" is one of the largest psychological research conferences in the German-speaking countries. It has a long-standing tradition reaching back to 1959. There are usually more than 500 contributions, organized in symposia, individual talks in thematic sessions, and poster sessions. "TeaP" is an abbreviation for "Tagung experimentell arbeitender Psychologen“. This means that the common denominator of the research presented here is the experimental method in behavioral research. Contributions are welcome from various psychological subdisciplines using or improving the experimental method, such as Cognitive Psychology, Social Psychology, Methodology etc.

The next TeaP will take place in Mannheim, April 1-4 2012. For the first time, the official language of the TeaP will be English, primarily to enable colleagues from other European countries to participate.

We are happy to announce four renowned and distinguished scholars who agreed to enrich the conference with keynote lectures:
Nira Liberman (Tel Aviv University),
Eric J. Johnson (Columbia University),
James S. Nairne (Purdue University),
David R. Shanks (University College London)

Online submission for contributions will be open from September 15th 2011. The submission deadline for symposia is October 15th 2011, individual papers can be submitted  until November 15th. The program committee will decide on the acceptance of contributions until December 20th, 2011.
