PhD position in Brain & Cognition, KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium

We are looking for a motivated PhD candidate to conduct research in the field of cognitive control, multitasking and aging, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Eva Van den Bussche (Brain & Cognition, KU Leuven) and Dr. Gethin Hughes (Department of Psychology, University of Essex).

We offer a fully funded, full time PhD position for an initial period of 1 year, with the possibility of extension for a further 3 years upon positive evaluation, for a total duration of 4 years.

The project will integrate behavioral and psychophysiological methods, including EEG. A quantitative background and good programming skills (e.g. R, Python, Matlab) are important. Experience with behavioral experimentation, programming, advanced statistical analysis, and/or EEG, is an asset. While knowledge of Dutch is not required, it is an advantage when working with older populations.

For more information, see the link below or contact Prof. Dr. Eva Van den Bussche, or Dr. Gethin Hughes

Application deadline: 15 May 2026

Research Position — A statistical mind: combining prior and contingent language statistics, University of Pavia, Pavia, Italy

This position, within the FWO-funded STATMIND project, investigates how prior linguistic knowledge shapes the statistical learning of new linguistic regularities. The researcher will develop computational measures from language corpora and Distributional Semantic Models and use them to design experiments and model how prior knowledge influences the learning of novel words, in collaboration with Ghent University (Prof. Louisa Bogaerts) and based at the University of Pavia (Prof. Luca Rinaldi).

Research Position — Cognitive maps between language and space, University of Pavia, Pavia, Italy

This position investigates how linguistic representations contribute to mental representations and cognitive control, combining computational models of semantic knowledge with behavioural and EEG measures. The researcher will design and implement experiments, collect and analyse behavioural and neurophysiological data, and integrate computational and cognitive-neuroscience approaches to study the relationship between language, mental representations and cognitive conflict.
