PhD position in cognitive science, ONERA, Salon-de-Provence, France

A PhD position is available at the ONERA in Salon-de-Provence. The successful candidate will work on studies of perceptual decision-making and confidence. The project aims at decoding individuals' confidence from EEG and eye-tracking signals. Research methods include psychophysics, EEG and eye-tracking. The project is a collaborative effort with 8 other labs throughout Europe. S/he will be supervised by Dr. Andrea Desantis (ONERA), Kobe Desender (KU Leuven) and Dr Guillaume Masson (CNRS), and will join the Cognitive Engineering and Applied Neurosciences (ICNA) group in Salon-de-Provence (France). The candidate may be led to travel to Marseille since some of the studies will be conducted at the Institut de Neurosciences de la Timone.

Candidates should have a Master's degree (or equivalent) in cognitive science or related fields. Previous experience with computer programming is highly preferred. Experience with visual psychophysics, EEG, eye-tracking, and/or machine learning is a plus.

Candidates must comply with the Marie Curie Actions rule for mobility, which holds that they have spent no more than 12 months of the past 3 years in France.

To apply, please send CV, cover letter summarizing your research experience/interests, transcripts, and contact information for two references to andrea.desantis@onera.fr .

Speech processing and reading are essential unique human abilities underpinning social, educational, and professional advancement. However early biomarkers of speech processing deficits that have been documented in reading disabilities such as Developmental Dyslexia (DD) have yet to be identified. Here, we will explore whether the cortical tracking of speech (CTS) - the temporal alignment between fluctuations in the speech signal and fluctuations in electrical brain activity – can predict later reading deficits in DD.

Speech processing and reading are essential unique human abilities underpinning social, educational, and professional advancement. However, biologically constrained models of spoken and visual word recognition are still lacking, particularly in the domains of bilingualism. Here, we will investigate the neurobiological underpinnings of speech and reading in bilinguals and second language learners using data collected with advanced neuroimaging tools in our lab.
